St Michael Prayer PRINTABLE (prayer for protection against EVIL!)

The Catholic Church has so many beautiful prayers and beautiful traditions.  When I returned to the Faith after over ten years of being away, the Prayer to St. Michael was one of the first prayers I memorized.  My local parish continued the tradition of praying this prayer at the end of the liturgy.  I encourage you to download this “St Michael Prayer PRINTABLE” so that you can learn it, share it, and continue to let it bless you and your family!

Who is St. Michael?

St. Michael leads the army of God!  This special angel is strong and powerful against all evil, especially the works of the devil.  God chose St. Michael to not only protect, but instill courage in us.  St. Michael intervenes when necessary so that we may not be harmed, especially when we pray to him.

References to St. Michael in the Bible

One of the most famous places that St. Michael appears in Scripture can be found in Revelation 12:7-12:

7Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.

10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say:

“Now have come the salvation and the power
and the kingdom of our God,
and the authority of his Messiah.
For the accuser of our brothers and sisters,
who accuses them before our God day and night,
    has been hurled down.
11 They triumphed over him
by the blood of the Lamb
    and by the word of their testimony;
they did not love their lives so much
    as to shrink from death.
12 Therefore rejoice, you heavens
and you who dwell in them!
But woe to the earth and the sea,
because the devil has gone down to you!
He is filled with fury,
because he knows that his time is short.”

Where do we need protection?

When I was a child and prayed to my guardian angel and all other angels, I thought “protection” simply meant protection from physical harm, such as a car accident or walking in the city at night.  But as I have grown older, I realized that I need protection from many things.  Sometimes I need protection from temptation to sin, like gluttony (I just want to eat the entire plate of chocolate chip cookies!).  Other times, I need protection from my own self-deprecating thoughts that put me in a negative, downtrodden state of mind.  Maybe you need protection from similar things.  Perhaps you would like to pray to St. Michael to protect someone you love, like your child or your spouse.

The beauty of praying to St. Michael

When we pray to St. Michael, we put full trust in God that we are being protected.  We do not always see a car that may have slammed into us or verbal abuse that we would have experienced, had St. Michael not pacified the heart of someone with an angry tongue.  This allows us to continue to “daydream” about all the circumstances that St. Michael and all of his angels may have protected us without our knowledge.  Talk about FAITH!

What about children?

This is one of my children’s FAVORITE PRAYERS!  My sons especially love St. Michael because he models strength in such a masculine way.  They want to be just like him, fighting the devil!  If you want to encourage your children to love St. Michael too, it isn’t hard!  You can make it extra special by celebrating his feast day on September 29 and having friendly sword fights (with cardboard or other toy swords… exercise caution, of course!).  Many Christians refer to this feast day as Michaelmas.  Here are some other fun ideas for celebrating Michaelmas from Catholic All Year , one of my favorite resources for bringing liturgical living to another level with your family.

Why we NEED to pray to St. Michael

The power of the devil is real.  Yes, Jesus wins in the end.  Jesus prevails and the devil has no chance.  But he continues to wander throughout the world, trying to tempt souls into making choices that separate them from God.  He delights in our misery and suffering.  The devil is pleased when we fall for his many lies.  So the more we pray to St. Michael, the more protection we receive!  St. Michael keeps the devil and his demons further away from us, even if we do not necessarily feel it or see it.

Best ways to use this “St Michael Prayer Printable”

Do you have a friend or loved one who could use some encouragement?  Give them this prayer!  In fact, go the extra mile and mail it to them.  Everyone loves thoughtful mail that breaks up the monotony of annoying solicitations.  You can also place this printable by your bedside so that you may memorize it every night before you go to bed.  This serves double purposes because you are also calling on St. Michael to protect you in your sleep!

Prayer to St. Michael

St. Michael the Archangel,

Defend us in battle!

Be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil.

May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;

and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host,

cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits

who prowl throughout the world

seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
