“Pray for your husband.” Some days, praying for your husband may sound easy. Your husband is your partner and your best friend, so it can feel natural to close your eyes and devote a few moments asking God to guide and protect him. Other days, a prayer for your husband can feel difficult and impossible. You may have just had a petty argument, leading you both to feel prideful and stubborn. You may be experiencing a challenging season in your marriage that makes you two feel like you are simply roommates and nothing more. However, sometimes we need a gentle reminder from a friend or sister that praying for your husband can be a POWERFUL WEAPON. By praying for your husband, you are strengthening your family unit. You are strengthening your family tree. You are growing in faith and womanhood, showing God that you can be faithful and patient and loving as He designed you. By praying for your husband, you are showing grace, humility, and femininity in a special way.
In many seasons of my life, it has not been easy for my to pray for my husband. I have worn a grumpy face throughout the day, stewed over a fight with a heavy heart all throughout the day, and demanded an apology in order to change my attitude. Quite frankly, I was ugly. But I did not ever feel good about it. I never felt triumphant when I was “right.” I felt lonely. So I asked God to help me to become a better wife. I asked God to give me the answer to make my marriage better and my faith stronger. And He led me to prayer. Admittedly, it was confusing because our culture did not “teach” me to lean into prayer. Instead, our culture taught me that I “don’t need a man” and that I should not “put up with [insert expletive here].” Our culture taught me to walk away if I was not “treated right,” not to walk hand in hand with my husband.
But it never worked. My stubborn, grumpy, mean attitude never helped my marriage. So I tried the opposite. I prayed and prayed, even if it was one sentence. I often prayed, “God, help me to be a better wife.” I often prayed, “God, help me to love my husband.” I often prayed, “God, help me to care less about being ‘right’ and care more about loving my husband and loving You.” And miraculously, I felt better. And the situation improved. And my husband and I could move on. It wasn’t always easy, but God was always there.
And so I’m here to encourage YOU!
Prayer for Your Husband After An Argument
If you are in need of encouragement as well as an idea because words are not coming easily to you, pray this prayer for your husband each day. In the case of a disagreement, our emotions often overtake us and we cannot think clearly or rationally. We feel unable to soften our rock-hard hearts because we are preoccupied with who is right in an argument instead of whether or not we are acting in love. In fact, after an argument, we could share our side of the story with a friend or counselor. However, we do not actually feel better after sharing, even if the listening party agrees with our stance.
Prayer for Your Husband and His Stresses
Perhaps you need a prayer for your husband because he is dealing with stress at work and you would like to pray for his worries and his concerns. It can feel disheartening when you are unsure of what to say to “fix it” because your husband’s challenges are his crosses to bear and they are part of the journey. “A Prayer for My Husband” will help you to find peace in your own heart for problems that cannot be solved in one day so that you can continue to serve and support your husband with a calmer, more positive disposition.
Prayer for Your Husband’s Health and Safety
Or perhaps you need a prayer because your husband deals with chronic illness or his job calls for standing in situations that are dangerous and life-threatening, so you are seeking a general prayer to ask God to watch over his health and safety. Each time you pray this prayer for your husband can feel like a “drop in the bucket,” allowing God to hear your own worries and concerns and encouraging you to trust in Him, particularly in areas that are beyond your control.
Prayer for Your Husband… just because!
Lastly, life and marriage may be going well and everything feels like a blessing, so perhaps you are seeking a prayer for your husband because you attended a bible study or homily that encouraged you to pray for your husband each day. Perhaps you attended a wedding that inspired you to continue to pray for your husband. Perhaps it is a New Year’s resolution for you to pray for your husband more regularly, multiple times each day. You needed an evergreen, all-encompassing prayer that you can add to your “daily cocktail” of prayers for all of your loved ones. You don’t have a specific reason or an urgent sense to pray for your husband, but you want to fulfill your role as his wife and helpmate, serving God by continuing to pray for your husband as you promised on your wedding day.
So again, pray this prayer. Even if it feels as though nothing is happening when you first pray this prayer and you still feel sad, upset, disappointed, angry, or complacent, keep praying. Pray this prayer over and over again throughout the day. Over time, praying for your husband will naturally calm you. The Holy Spirit takes over and does the rest of the work.
Heavenly Father,
I thank you for the gift of my husband, who blesses our family with his love and talents each and every day. I thank you for giving him the wisdom and strength that he needs to support us. I pray that you protect him always, strengthen him always, and guide him always. I pray for all of his worries and concerns: bring him peace in those moments, allowing him to trust in You, in Your plan, and in Your perfect timing. I pray that You may bring him closer to You each day and that you continue to bless our marriage with love, goodness, and faithfulness. Amen.
