A wedding anniversary is a beautiful milestone at one or fifty years. It is inspiring to see a couple make it through trials and continue to love each other. Wedding anniversaries give people hope. It proves that love can last and that people won’t quit on each other. This is why a wedding anniversary prayer is so important.
Every Year is a Milestone
A wedding anniversary is not just important for the couple who is celebrating. Children, both young and adult, are happy to see that their parents are still together. Friends and relatives cannot help but smile to hear that a couple has not given up. Why is that? Because marriage is hard. Often, marriage means putting your spouse above yourself. When a husband and wife have done that for years, it is inspiring. And certainly, they didn’t do it without God and without strength. Couples do not stay together without a “why.” In fact, speaking from experience, my husband and I give each other a “high 5” on every anniversary. We know that we could have quit like so many other couples. But we didn’t.
How a Wedding Anniversary Prayer Helps a Couple
Most people do not give a couple a gift for every wedding anniversary. Instead, the celebration is limited to a greeting. It is usually up to the couple to celebrate on their own. It seems as though the couple themselves need to make their anniversary important. So when you say a prayer for a couple on their anniversary, you are saying that you are still cheering them on. You are still encouraging them even after the party is over. If you are praying for your spouse on your wedding anniversary, you are giving a gift that money cannot buy. You are giving part of your heart with no dollar amount.
A “Mini Vow Renewal”
If you are reading this and your wedding anniversary is coming up, have you ever considered renewing your wedding vows? As Catholics, my parents renewed their wedding vows almost every year during the month of their anniversary. This served as their “wedding anniversary prayer.” It was an additional blessing and beautiful reminder of their love and faithfulness for each other and for God. I was always inspired by this because it didn’t matter if it was a “milestone” year. They did not renew their vows and say a prayer on their wedding anniversary for only five, ten, and twenty-five years. Sometimes they renewed their vows on a fourteenth year or a twenty-seventh year. It reminded me that every year is special. Every year needs prayers, married or not.
