When you say a prayer for a friend on his or her birthday, you are asking God to bless them in ways that may be beyond your means. It could be that you are asking God to bless the person with good health because that is beyond your control. Because of faith, you know that is something God can give. Your gift may be limitless because your prayers know NO BOUNDS! God can continue to stretch that prayer over the course of the person’s life.
A Gift That Anyone of Any Age Can Give
This past birthday, my children were 8, 6, 3, and 10 months old. I knew that I didn’t want to celebrate with anyone else in the whole world except for them and my husband. On the morning of my birthday, my little ones said, “Mommy, we are going to pray for you today.” That was better than a whole room full of wrapped presents!
Just as in my case, you may have a child who wishes to give a parent or another special adult a very special gift. But children do not have the means the way an adult does. Or perhaps an elderly person is unable to purchase a gift because of limited means or limited mobility. Giving the gift of a birthday prayer is meaningful and priceless. It shows that you are giving a piece of your heart and a piece of your time.
When Should You Say a Birthday Prayer for a Friend?
The birthday prayer is something that you can say in the quiet of your heart, during a meal with just you and that friend, or with an entire group during a birthday party! Maybe it is something you pray right before singing “Happy Birthday to You,” blowing out the candles, and cutting into the birthday cake. This is something you can say over Facetime or over the phone. You can even text this prayer to your friend from far away, telling him or her that you said this prayer.
Praying for Their Faith
The birthday prayer asks God to help your friend to grow in faith. We could all use more faith! There are times when we feel discouraged and hopeless, so this birthday prayer invites God to be there when we need Him the most. Growing in faith could also mean growing in wisdom. By praying for a person’s faith, you are praying that they grow in community with their church. You are praying that they continue to glean understanding from Scripture. You are praying that they are surrounded by like-minded, Christian people who will help them to grow in relationship with God.
Praying for Love in Their Lives
The birthday prayer also asks God to continue to show up in love in the person’s life. This may be through other people who serve as instruments, showing kindness and selflessness. Praying for love in the birthday celebrant’s life can also mean bringing a romantic partner into his or her life. If he or she is married or engaged, praying for love can mean praying that the celebrant continues to have a strong, healthy relationship. Lastly, it can mean praying that the person continues to find all hope in Jesus Christ, the source of love.
Praying for Prosperity
Maybe you are not necessarily praying that your friend wins the lottery. But you are praying that the person is successful in business. Or you are praying that the person is able to stay financially stable. Perhaps you are praying that the person makes good financial decisions or gets good deals. I know that I have also prayed that my friends and loved ones do not ever worry about money.
Praying for Their Happiness
I think that we can all agree that we want our friends to be happy. We feel joy being around happy people. Praying for their happiness can mean praying for their day-to-day, like their commute to work or their interactions with co-workers in a meeting. Praying for their happiness can also mean long-term. For instance, you can pray that a friend is happy in her motherhood journey. You can pray that a friend is happy and content with his or her life season. You can also pray that a person finds happiness in spite of a challenge, such as a terminal illness or a toxic work environment.

Heavenly Father,
We come to you in thanksgiving for our wonderful friend. We thank You for blessing this friend with the gift of life and we thank You for the gift of our friendship. We come to you with open hearts, asking that You bless them with another year of faith, love, and prosperity. Lord, we ask that You continue to make Your presence known in their life, giving them the support and encouragement they need to continue to do Your will. Keep this special friend safe, healthy, happy, and holy. We pray that they continue to grow in communion with You, Your Son, and the Holy Spirit with each passing year. We also pray for the safety, happiness, and well-being of all those celebrating with us today. Amen.
