Prayer for Rain: A Prayer for Gardeners, Farmers, and Homebodies

I don’t know about you, but there’s nothing better than a fresh pair of wool socks, a warm cup of tea, a cozy fireplace, and a good book on a rainy day.  Perhaps it’s just the introverted homebody in me, but I know I’m not the only person who feels this way.  And especially growing up in Southern California, where rain is an infrequent visitor, I have always said a prayer for rain.

Whether you’re a farmer, gardener, or a homebody, PRAY FOR RAIN! I have also included a few inspiring Scripture passages to meditate upon and a printable PDF prayer that you can say every day.

Should I say a prayer for rain?

Yes!  Absolutely!  You should pray for rain.  Whether you live in a drought-prone area or not, you never know what the season will bring.  Rain washes our earth so that it becomes clean again.  Rain provides nourishment for our crops.  Rain slows us down in a sped-up world.  So yes, ask God for what we need.  We need to be made clean.  We need nourishment.  We need an excuse for pause.

Why you should say a prayer for rain

Of all the reasons to pray for rain, I want to focus on what I think is most important: God simply wants to hear us ask for what we need.  When we ask God for rain, we are being honest and having an open dialogue with him.  We can’t buy rain on Amazon.  We can’t make rain in our kitchen.  Only God can provide this for us.

Are you living in a drought?

There are many seasons in life when we feel alone.  We wonder if God is there.  We ask ourselves why certain tragedies happen or why we must experience grief, pain, and loss.  It’s often difficult to offer up our suffering as reparations for our sins.  But prayer helps to remind us that God will never abandon us.  We may feel like we have no one, but it’s far from the truth.

Praying for prosperity

When I think of rain, I also think of the symbolism.  Rain symbolizes prosperity.  I think of a showering of gifts and blessings from God.  So by saying a prayer for rain, you are saying your own thanksgiving prayer to God for the blessings in your life.  Ask God for more blessings to come like a torrential downpour.

Praying for faith and trust in God

It can be difficult to have faith and trust in God, especially when it comes to things that are beyond are control, like the weather.  So when I pray for rain, I pray that God calms my worries and helps me to not be so preoccupied with controlling everything in my life.  Whether I like it or not, it will be sunny, rainy, or snowy, and I don’t get to decide.  It forces me to remember that God is much greater, more powerful, and knows better.  There’s a special peace in that.

Praying for safety

Sometimes rain can be limited to a drizzle that makes for fun puddle-jumping memories with the children.  But other times, rain can lead to floods and devastation.  While I pray for rain, I also pray that everyone is safe.  Sometimes traveling in the rain can be challenging, such as when you’re driving on a highway with limited visibility or at risk of hydroplaning.  I ask my guardian angel to be with me during these times.  (If you are looking for another prayer for safety, check this one out).

God provides everything we need

Whether or not we get the rain or the other blessings we believe we want, God always provides what we need.  I always try to remind myself that even when I feel stressed in motherhood or I worry about my finances, God will always get me through it.

Prayer for Rain

Almighty and all-powerful God,

We thank you for the blessings you give us in heaven and on earth, particularly the beauty of nature and the goodness it provides. We come to You in thanksgiving for the gift of water to cleanse us, nourish us, baptize us, and heal us. Please send down rain upon the earth, renewing it and nurturing all that grows. Just as you shower us with your love, shower us with hope, faith, and trust in You. Send us rain so that we may continue to care for all living things. Just as the rain after a drought brings us relief, we pray for relief when we feel alone and desperate. Lastly Lord, keep us and all living things safe in the rain so that we may enjoy the abundance and marvel at your wondrous works.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Challenge: Appreciating the Season

If the season goes as you had hoped and you get lots of rain, thank God for that!  Be mindful of how quick and easy it is to find something to complain about.  If the season does not go as you had hoped, ask God to give you a grateful heart.  Pray that God blesses you with understanding and again, faith in his timing.
