Daughters are special gifts. I know because I have two little ladies who are beautiful, kind, smart, and fun to be around. As a mother, a part of me gets to relive my childhood when I play with them. I never had sisters, so it’s delightful to finally have tea party company! So each year on their birthdays, I spend extra time and thoughtfulness as I pray for them. I have always felt that a birthday prayer for my daughter has been the best gift I could give to each of them. As they continue to grow, I marvel at the amazing women they are becoming and I have no shortage of hopes and dreams for them. So I give it to God in prayer. The uniqueness of daughters
Daughters have many unique qualities and experiences, which can differ from sons. Their femininity, sensitivity, and gentleness make parenting daughters a challenging, but growth-fostering experience. In today’s world, I want to teach my daughters how to embrace the roles that God gave them in life. Quite frankly, I want them to love being women and I do not want them to feel like they need to compete with men. I don’t want them to feel like they have to be exactly like men. I want them to celebrate their biblical womanhood and cherish it always. So I will continue to pray these prayers every day, devoting special intentions on their birthday.
How a birthday prayer for my daughter brings us closer
When I say a birthday prayer for my daughter, I am hyper-focused on specific intentions I am asking God. So I think about my daughter and her qualities, her needs, and areas she may feel insecurity. When I do this, I am able to empathize with my daughter, allowing me to better understand her. This brings us closer because I can selflessly remove my own desires and focus on how to be the best mother I can be when I think about what my daughter really needs.
Praying for her health
Good health is one of the firs things I pray for when asking God to help my daughters. I don’t want them to experience chronic pains or ailments that keep them from living good, happy lives. I want them to live long enough to be the mothers and grandmothers or sisters of the faith, whichever they are called to be. In my prayers, I ask God to nourish them and make healthy foods appear appetizing to them.
A prayer to God for good relationships
I know that my daughters will continue to have many relationships in their lives. They will enjoy friends in social clubs and colleagues in the workplace. I dedicate time to pray that they are not only treated with dignity, respect, and kindness, but that they demonstrate the same behavior to others. I think at some point, all parents fear that their daughters will experience toxic friendships or bring home a bad boyfriend. I am not immune to these thoughts. Because of these thoughts, prayer pushes me to ask God to bless them with lots of wisdom when deciding which company they choose to keep. Lastly, I pray for my and my husband’s relationship with our daughters so that we may always be close.
Hopes for her hobbies
In a world that is easy to get sucked into social media and other vanities, I want so much more for my daughters. I laugh because I notice that when I pray that my daughters find hobbies and passions they love, God makes it appear in the form of a messy kitchen or scribbles on the wall. I try to tell myself to be patient because my daughters are growing to love cooking, baking, and drawing. Praying for my daughters and their hobbies means praying that they are always lifelong learners.
For her habits
We all have habits, good and bad! You can be sure that I pray for both. What do I mean? I pray that my daughters establish good habits, like keeping a tidy room and reading every day. But I also pray that they break bad habits, like whining when they don’t get their way. Because they are young, I don’t know if my daughters will stumble across certain poor habits in adulthood, like smoking or gossiping. So I pray that they avoid those things and that God distracts them with better habits.
That she may always be safe
I will never, ever stop praying that my daughters are safe. Whether they are traveling across the world to a foreign country or driving home from work, I pray fervently to their guardian angels to protect them. Every parent’s worst nightmare is that their children will not come home safely. So on their birthdays and every day, I pray for my daughters and all children and their safety. You can never have too much prayer for safety!
Protection against evil
There are so many forces that want to push our children away from God. Our daughters must face many temptations: greed, lust, laziness, jealousy, and so much more. Well if I have anything to say about it, the devil is not coming anywhere near my daughter! I encourage you to pray that your daughter’s guardian angel stays close at all times. Lastly, but certainly not least, I pray that my daughters continue to have a strong faith and a strong relationship with the Lord. I pray that this continues throughout their lives and becomes an unbreakable chain with my grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and further on. I pray that my daughters always feel comfortable to turn to God and our Blessed Mother for help. I have made lots of mistakes in parenting already, but one choice that I believe can always be rectified is the daily emphasis of prayer and faith throughout life. It is never too late or too often to teach your daughters to pray and to make it a regular habit, a constant conversation.
Birthday Prayer for My Daughter
Heavenly Father,
I pray with a most humble, grateful heart for the gift of my daughter. Today on her birthday, I pray that you continue to bless her. Grant her good health, a strong body, a resilient immune system, and sufficient nutrition. Make it possible for her to continue to nurture positive, healthy relationships with friends and family members. Enrich her life with hobbies that delight her, allowing her to enjoy the goodness of your creation and use her talents to glorify You. Give her the motivation to foster good habits in her life so that she may achieve her goals as well as maintain a fulfilling, faith-filled lifestyle that honors You. Protect her always, keeping her safe, both in daily interactions and daily travels. Protect her from evil, strengthening her will to resist the temptations of the Devil. Above all, Lord, please strengthen her faith and relationship with You, including You, praising You, serving You, and loving You always.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
