Why should I say a prayer for protection against evil?
Evil is everywhere, whether you can see it or not. I will never forget when a fellow mother told me, “The devil is intelligent. He is not going to come and spread evil in ways that we can detect. He is smarter than that.” She indicated that the devil will cause harm under the guise of goodness. What does this mean?
Evil pretending to be good
For instance, many conservatives talk about how feminism has poisoned society. While this may be controversial for some to read, I have experienced this first hand. In my teens and twenties, I believed in the “girl boss” and “women can do anything” ideals. Yes, it seemed as though I was empowered and strong. But later, I had to fight those habits of thinking when I started to read the Word more closely and wanted to follow God’s commandment to be submissive to my husband. This is one way that the devil creeps in: by working to break up the family unit.
Will a “prayer for protection against evil” work against evil?
Yes! Absolutely! Any prayer that asks God for protection will help us. God wants us to talk to Him and call upon Him. In fact, the prayer I included below includes the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Joseph. The devil hates them because they are so powerful in aiding us. Their holiness is blinding to evil, so pray to them always! Just as a child feels safe, warm, and protected by their parents, Mary and Joseph are our Holy Family who want to protect us as well. They do not want us to wander through the world, lost and alone. We do not need to be afraid when we have them on our side.
Jesus teaches us to say a prayer for protection against evil!
In the Lord’s Prayer, which I have also included below, Jesus literally teaches us to pray for protection against evil. This is his response when his disciples ask Him how to pray. He would not include it accidentally! Jesus warned us against many evils and it is important for us to be vigilant. Even if you forget to say this prayer I have written, you will always have the protection you need if you pray the Lord’s Prayer. It is one of the first prayers that we learn as children and we hear it at every Mass.
Increase your armor against evil in one simple way
I like to say the Lord’s Prayer and as many prayers as I can in Latin. I remember hearing that the devil HATES LATIN. Knowing this, exorcists use Latin when expelling evil spirits. I highly recommend practicing Latin, even if it is only a few prayers. Over time, you will memorize these prayers. I find them to be very beautiful and I know you will too! It is far from a dead language. It is arguably the most powerful language we need.
How to teach your children to pray for protection against evil
The devil can be frightening, and rightly so. The last thing we want is to go to Hell for all of eternity. While it may seem bold and too mature for children, this is one truth we should not shield from them. Right and wrong, good and evil: these are very real. We want our children to learn this early on so that they are equipped with the strength they need for bigger problems later in life.

Other ways that the devil will creep in
As I mentioned before, evil creeps into our family unit. Continue to “stock your arsenal.” Even if your prayer is as simple as “Be with me Lord. Protect me against evil,” this will help! I highly suggest praying for your husband every day, especially in the morning, at the start of your day. Pray for your marriage! Pray for your children while they are at school! I also like to pray Psalm 23 (more popularly known as “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.”)
You are never alone
The best, surest way to Heaven is by having constant dialogue with God through prayer. It’s easier than you think. Speak to God as if He is a friend, right next to you, all throughout the day. He’s my carpool buddy. Anytime I am feeling impatient, I take a deep breath, close my eyes, and quickly say a Hail Mary or a one-liner: “Jesus, I trust in You.”
