I will never forget the expressions on my sons’ faces each year when they wake up on their birthdays. They see a few scattered balloons on their bed. Then, they come downstairs and see construction paper and crepe paper decorations throughout the house. I don’t go overboard by littering the house with dozens of wrapped gifts. There isn’t always a big party with all of their friends from baseball. But I will always devote myself to making sure that they feel loved.
Each birthday is another “Mother’s Day” for me, reminding me how blessed I am to be a mother, to be their mother. Each year, I say an extra special prayer for them on their birthdays. A Birthday Prayer for My Son: Perfect for ANY BUDGET
When I became a mother, I was 24. I had just graduated from college and made $17,000 a year. My husband and I didn’t have a lot of money. But we had a lot of love to give. So when our sons’ birthdays rolled around, we still wanted to make it as special as we could, even on a tight budget. We tried to be as creative as we could, making decorations and taking advantage of free fun, like playing at the park. One of my sons’ birthdays was a “Pancake at the Park” party because pancakes were what we could afford.
But years later, I have realized that the best gift I could give my sons didn’t cost me any money. The best thing I could do for them was to pray for them. Yes, whether you are broke or making millions, you can bless your son with prayer. God hears all prayers and doesn’t check our bank account first.
How can I say a birthday prayer for my son?

Pray for his health
Naturally, one of the biggest worries that moms carry pertains to her son’s health. Every mother wants her son to feel healthy and strong enough to play, work, and live a happy, long life. So of course, this prayer encourages you to prays for your son’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Pray that your son does not experience severe illness and that he continues to grow stronger each day.
Pray for his relationships
It goes without saying that our sons will experience lots of relationships, from professional ones to romantic ones. Pray that your son is surrounded by good people who seek his best interest. Pray that he is around people who encourage him, especially in his faith journey. Naturally, he will face conflict in relationships, so pray that he can overcome those difficulties.
Pray that he HAS FUN!
We all want our sons to have fun in their lives. We want them to enjoy their hobbies and make time for recreation. So I encourage you to pray that your son finds leisurely activities that inspire him and reenergize him, especially if he needs to decompress from school or work.
Pray that he uses his talents
Without a doubt, your son was blessed with many talents! However, as with the “Parable of the Talents,” sometimes we keep them hidden. Our sons might feel insecure or lack confidence to share these talents with the world. One of the best gifts you can give your son is to pray that he nurtures his talents and uses them to do God’s will.
Pray for his goals
It can be exciting to hear that your son has hopes and dreams! As parents, we want our sons to achieve those goals. So pray that your son sets good goals that keep him focused on positive, which avoids idle and wasteful habits and behaviors. Pray that your son is blessed with the perseverance to keep going toward his goals, especially when he feels like quitting.
Pray for his safety
As with health, we want our sons to be safe. This can range from safety when engaging in extreme sports to safety when driving home at night. I pray that my son’s guardian angel protects him when his vision or foresight is impaired or limited.
In addition, I pray for my son’s safety against the temptations of the devil. I know the devil is trying to harm him, so I pray to St. Michael and the archangels to shield him.
Pray for his faith and relationship with God
Most importantly, I pray that my son does not lose faith in God. I remember hearing that “God has no grandchildren.” In other words, my son has his own relationship with God as His child. I pray that my sons find their own voice when talking to God and that their communication continues throughout their lives. I never want my sons to cut God off and I want them to feel like their prayer life is alive.

Heavenly Father,
I come before you today in celebration and thanksgiving for the gift of my son. I thank you for blessing me with my son, allowing me to understand a glimpse of Your love for us as your children. I pray that you bless my son today and throughout his life. Grant him good health, a strong body, a resilient immune system, and sufficient nutrition. Make it possible for him to continue to nurture positive, healthy relationships with friends and family members. Enrich his life with hobbies that ignite his passion, allowing him to enjoy the goodness of your creation and use his talents to glorify You. Give him the motivation to foster good habits in his life so that he may achieve his goals as well as maintain a fulfilling, faith-filled lifestyle that honors You. Protect him always, keeping him safe, both in daily interactions and daily travels. Protect him from evil, strengthening his will to resist the temptations of the Devil. Above all, Lord, please strengthen his faith and relationship with You, including You, praising You, serving You, and loving You always.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
