I don’t think there can ever be too many prayers for an unborn baby and his or her mother. You may have read the title of this post and wondered which women and children apply. Beautiful news: this prayer is for:
- women are currently pregnant;
- women who suffered loss through miscarriage;
- women who suffered loss through abortion;
- babies who passed away due to miscarriage;
- babies who passed away due to abortions;
- the safe and healthy delivery of these babies;
- the safety and health of pregnant women; and
- the families of these mothers and their children.
And guess what? You can pray for all women and children throughout the world, both past and present!
Who are the Unborn?
When referring to the “unborn,” there are several instances or scenarios. An “unborn” baby may be a baby who is still in his or her mother’s womb and is not yet born. But “unborn” can also pertain to babies who never had the chance to naturally be born, but would have been born, had their lives not been terminated through abortion. Last, we think of babies who passed away through miscarriage.
Why should I say a “Prayer for Unborn Baby and Mother?”
Preparing for new life can be very exciting, but it can also be stressful for the mother, the father, and for other family members! In fact, the mother’s stress can lead the baby to feel stress as well. Prayers are a great way to ask for the intercession of our Blessed Mother to protect both the mother and the baby from all harm. Mama Mary wants to see her children thrive, growing in love and union with the Lord on earth. We may not see how our prayers bring blessings each moment (just like with every other prayer), but our Faith allows us to trust that God’s plans and timing are perfect, so our prayers are working toward that greater good.
Our Dangerous World
Prayers are also critical because we live in a modern world that not only accepts abortion, not only justifies it, not only sponsors it, but tragically encourages and celebrates it. I recently heard that some people are now throwing “Abortion Access Parties,” which is absolutely horrifying. This is clearly diabolical intervention and our prayers are much needed for mothers and their children who are influenced by this toxic culture. We should also pray for an end to these ideas, which are tearing apart families and contributing to the eroding mental health of women.
The Dignity of the Human Person
Where does the Catholic Church say that life begins at conception? Grow confident when defending your Faith and the evil of abortion! According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph 2270:
“Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception. From the first moment of his existence, a human being must be recognized as having the rights of a person – among which is the inviolable right of every innocent being to life.
- Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you.
My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately wrought in the depths of the earth.”
We must be relentless in our defense of life, especially since the unborn are so incredibly vulnerable and cannot defend themselves!
Giving Thanks for New Life
This “Prayer for Unborn Baby and Mother,” first and foremost, offers thanksgiving to God for the gift of new life! We are so blessed to continue bringing life into this world. We should cherish it and never take it for granted. I often think it is a miracle that we are still able to conceive and bear new life since there is such controversy and proven evidence that bioengineered food and chemicals in the atmosphere are affecting fertility in both men and women. God’s grace prevails, and we need to thank Him for it every day! I thank God every single day for my children, and I ask God to bless my future children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren (if that be His will).
Praying for the Dads
I think it’s important to pray for the fathers of these unborn children. Fathers expecting children (first-timers or not), experience a natural range of emotions, from excitement to nervousness. These men need all the courage, strength, and wisdom they can get! It’s also important to pray for the fathers who did not support their children’s mothers. May they continue to heal as well as grow in wisdom and maturity, asking God’s forgiveness for their selfishness and lack of trust. We all know that fathers are irreplaceable and make a tremendous impact on their children, so we should support them and pray for them always!
Grandparents, this is for you, too!
I recently stopped and thought about women who consider abortion: are the grandparents of these unborn children supporting abortion or supporting life? We often hear tales from both ends: parents of pregnant women who tell them to “take care of it.” Ironically, to “take care of ‘it'” does not mean to take care of the child. Instead, it means to “take care of the problem.” But I also wonder about the parents of pregnant women who grieve over the loss of their grandchildren, feeling like they could not convince their daughters and sons to choose life. I pray for them, hoping that all grandparents of unborn children will do what is right and good, encouraging their children to become responsible parents.
