Why I say a prayer for my mom every day
I’m blessed to say that I have always had a good relationship with my mom. She has always been kind, loving, and supportive. I imagine that many people can relate to this. But since I became a mother myself and moved about a hundred miles away, I did not see my mom every day like I did when I was single. I felt this absence even more when my father passed away in a tragic accident, leaving my mother widowed and broken. With a full-time job, wifely duties, and four young children who need a lot from me, I could not always dedicate much time to my mom the way I wished I could. But there’s one thing I can control: I can pray for her. She and I might be busy on any given day, or we only have time for a quick phone call. But I can always think of her throughout my day. I can always say a one-sentence prayer for her multiple times a day.
When you have a complicated relationship with your mom
Some of you may be reading this because your experience was a little different. Perhaps your mother battled addiction or her relationship with men had a negative impact on your childhood. While these might sound extreme, I know that some of you are reading this and you can identify with these heartaches. So perhaps it is not natural for you to ask God to help your mother. You might be thinking, “Sure, I can say a prayer for my mom, but it won’t change anything. It won’t necessarily heal our relationship.” Pray for her anyway. I like to believe that every mom does her best. Your mom’s “best” might not be your “best,” but we can only do what we can with the wisdom we have at the time that we have it. God works miracles of all shapes and sizes! Pray for your mom anyway.
How praying for my mom has helped me in my motherhood journey
I noticed that when I started to say a prayer for my mom, it changed me as a mother. Quite frankly, I noticed that my thoughts became less selfish. Everything was less about me. It was as if God softened my heart and blessed me with wisdom and understanding. By praying for my mom, I started to think more like her in the very best ways. I could finally empathize with any pains she may have experienced. I grew as a mother because God opened my eyes to selfless love, which I didn’t see before praying for my mom.
Ways you can pray for you mom
There are hundreds of prayers you can say for your mom! You can even make them up on the spot! You can say a tried and true “Hail Mary” for your mom. You can write a journal entry for her. But here are ways you can say a prayer for your mom each day, all of which are covered in my printable below.
Pray for your mom’s protection
The world can be a scary place! If your mom is still driving, pray that other drivers are safe on the road with her. Does your mom walk anywhere? Pray that she is surrounded by good, kind people wherever she travels. What about where your mom lives? Pray for safety over her home so that prowlers do not break in. These are all horrible thoughts, but pray to your mom’s guardian angel to shield her from these harmful things.
Pray for her worries
Worrying is one of my biggest vices. I don’t think I worried as much before I became a mother. But the more people I came to love, the more my fear grew that something bad would happen to them. I know that most mothers face the same internal struggles. So pray that your mom has peace of mind. Pray that her trust in God grows each day so that she can sleep better and go about her day in a lighter, happier mood. A mom’s worries will never truly go away, but every little bit of God’s help makes a difference!
Ask God to strengthen her faith
We go through ebbs and flows when it comes to our faith. My own mother is one of the most pious people I know. But when she lost my dad, it seemed like she was lost herself. I could see doubt in her eyes, and she told me herself that she doubted God’s presence. So pray for your mom’s faith. She may appear like she has supernatural strength, but she’s human, too. Ask God to build those faith muscles so that they never go limp.
Pray that God brings your mom healing
Every mother has experienced some sort of pain. When you love as much as a mother loves, you are bound to experience some sort of heartache. One of the best ways you can pray for your mom is to ask God to heal her. This might be healing for a physical ailment or healing from some other sort of brokenness. I believe that there is no hurt that God cannot heal. We might not see the healing happen, but God can bring that healing to your mom!
Ask God to give your mom rest
“I’ve rested enough,” said NO MOM EVER. Maybe your mom needs LITERAL REST. Her mind and her body are exhausted from the million things that moms do. Or maybe your mom needs emotional and spiritual rest. Perhaps she has put all of her effort and energy into a toxic relationship or grieving over mistakes she made in the past. Ask God to bring her rest in those agonies. We know that we can’t just buy our moms a magic pillow or the most expensive Sleep Number mattress so that all of her problems go away. But God can give her special rest in her mind and heart if we just ask.
Pray that she is surrounded by love and joy
There’s nothing more beautiful than a smiling mother! Pray that love always surrounds her. Pray that family and friends always support her. When I say a prayer for my mom, I always ask God to bring small AND big moments of joy into her daily life. Small joys show up in the kindness of a grocery clerk. Big joys show up in the cuddles of her grandchildren. I pray that until my mom’s last breath, she feels loved by all those around her.
Prayer for My Mom
O good, merciful, generous God,
You blessed the earth with beauty, love and goodness abound.
You did this especially by giving us the gift of my mother.
Lord God, I pray that you watch over her and protect her always.
Guard her heart, alleviate her worries, and help her to trust in You.
Strengthen her faith in You and allow her to live a long, healthy life.
Bring her healing in all the areas that she feels pain.
Help her to find rest and peace in her days.
Lord God, just as you blessed our Queen Mother Mary with wisdom, grace, and happiness on earth,
bestow countless blessings on my earthly mother.
I pray that she may always be surrounded by family and friends who care for her and value her.
Bring her fullness of joy in your presence.
Our Father…
Hail Mary…
Glory Be…
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
